Ear Rocks / Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Has anyone ever mentioned to you that you might have ear rocks? An estimated 20% of elderly suffer from undiagnosed Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV.
BPPV stands for:
B: Benign- not life threatening
P: Paroxysmal- sudden onset
P: Positional- changes of head and body position
V: Vertigo- the illusion of objects moving in the environment
BPPV is an inner ear disorder that causes vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance. It is caused when tiny crystals in your inner ear canals (called otoconia) move out of place.
These crystals can move when you change positions such as looking or reaching up/down, lying facing up, sitting up from a lying face up position, or rolling onto one side in bed. When the crystals or otoconia are displaced, they can send false signals to the brain, causing vertigo.
