Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

You do not have to strike your head to suffer from a concussion or traumatic brain injury. The damage is done by movement of your brain against your skull.

The immediate treatment protocol for post traumatic brain injury or concussion patients is rest and observation until cleared by a doctor. However, after being cleared to return to normal activity, many patients complain of dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and a general decrease in quality of life. If not addressed, these symptoms will continue to aggravate recovery.

Patients, young and older, complaining of dizziness, vertigo, and balance related issues after a period of rest, should have a formal dizziness and balance assessment performed.

A patient success story

A 74-year-old male came to The Center for Balance with complaints of dizziness and balance problems after falling at home and hitting his head on the fireplace in his family room. After being rushed to the emergency room, he was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain below the skull. After spending a week in the hospital, he was discharged but still had symptoms of dizziness and balance problems.

“It is like my feet are on waves. I used to be able to rock climb and hike and now I can’t even walk,” he shared. “I am afraid people think I’m drunk when I walk, and I don’t even drink. I feel light-headed and I need help with my dizziness."

Treatment at The Center for Balance was a success and soon our patient could perform all of his normal activities of daily living without dizziness or fear of falling.

In his words, he shares, “I can’t thank you guys enough! I don’t know how I would have gotten over all this -- I will definitely tell all my friends.”
